Description

1956 Roy Campanella Signed Brooklyn Dodgers Uniform Player's Contract, PSA/DNA Mint 9. Like Jackie Robinson, we only had the honor of witnessing Roy Campanella's genius on a Major League baseball diamond for a brief ten seasons. And there could and should have been so many more. Racial prejudice was responsible for an arrival at Ebbets much too late and a tragic accident forced his exit from the game all too soon. Still, in the brief period of time we were afforded the honor of watching Campy practice his craft, we learned what it meant to be a star both on and off the field.

Equally brilliant behind and at the plate, his calling cards were grace behind the dish, a rocket fuel powered arm, an astute handling of hurlers, and power hitting. Following in Jackie's footsteps, Campy was the second African-America to win the MVP award and the second to be enshrined at Cooperstown.

The 1956 "Uniform Player's Contract" offered here between the "Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Inc." and "Roy Campanella" for the sum of "Forty-Two Thousand Dollars ($42,000) For The Season" was drawn up mere months after Brooklyn captured its first and only World Series championship and Campy had earned his third N.L. MVP award, while batting .318 with thirty-two home runs and 107 RBI.

The four-page document is signed by Campanella at the bottom of the third page in 9/10 black ink. Sadly, two years after affixing his autograph to this contract, he was permanently disabled in a traffic accident. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
