1954 Topps Willie Mays #90 PSA Mint 9 - None Higher. Was there ever a ballplayer more suited to a particular position in a ballpark than Willie Mays was to center field at the New York Giants' Polo Grounds? The stadium was oddly shaped - like a horseshoe. It was only 279 feet down the left line and merely 258 down the right field line. Deepest center field was 483 feet. But that's not the end of it. The left center alley was 450 feet and the right center alley was 449 feet. And into this immense center field strode Willie Mays in 1951, pushing a fleet center fielder, Bobby Thomson, the Flying Scot, to third base. Willie became the Rookie of the Year. In 1954, the Giants faced the Cleveland Indians in the World Series and in Game One, in the eighth inning of a tie game, Mays raced to deepest center to make an over-the-shoulder catch ("The Catch") from a Vic Wertz drive, then a miraculous throw to prevent two runners from advancing. It turned the game around. The Giants went on sweep the Series. Mays was once a threat to break Babe Ruth's lifetime homer mark of 714, and Willie finished with 660. He played solely for the New York/ San Francisco Giants, except for two seasons back in New York with the Mets. Willie was a 2-time MVP, won a batting title and 12 Gold Gloves. For many fans, he was the best baseball player they had ever seen.
The Topps/Bowman card war continued in 1954. Bowman had exclusive contracts with many players. Thus, Topps, even including managers and some coaches, could only manage a 250-card set. Slightly larger than standard size, the cards measure 2-5/8" by 3-3/4". Each card has an innovative two front images, a large color head shot and a smaller B&W action image. Graded PSA Mint 9. One of sixteen graded MINT with none higher.
