    100% original and unaltered condition!

1954 Roy Campanella Game Worn Brooklyn Dodgers Jersey, MEARS A10. The humble backstop may not have garnered the attention that followed Jackie, Pee Wee and the Duke during that most glorious era of New York City baseball, but there was arguably no more essential component in the sustained success of those last Brooklyn Dodgers teams than Roy Campanella. "He was always doing something to help you win a game, whether it was digging out a low pitch, throwing out a baserunner, or hitting a home run," explained Dodgers manager, Walt Alston, reporting the facts that earned Campy three National League MVP Awards during the first half of the 1950's.

The tragic 1957 automobile accident that brought a sudden end to his Major League service failed to block Campanella's path to Cooperstown, but succeeded in establishing game used artifacts from his historic decade of Major League service to be among the toughest of post-war Hall of Famers.

The offered garment derives from the heart of Campy's glory years, tucked between the seasons of his second and third MVP Awards. It's a representation earning the highest possible assessment from the experts at MEARS, who find not a single deviation from original condition as worn by the Hall of Fame catcher.

Game use is characterized as "moderate," and we spot light pilling on the front, a common trait on Campy jerseys due to the abrasive effects of a chest protector. "Dodgers" and "39" are applied in blue and red felt respectively there, while the digits are repeated in blue on verso. "R Campanella" is embroidered in blue directly to the lower left front tail. Flip the tail over and you'll find the vintage supplied by a "Set 1 1954" flap tag anchored by a washing instructions label at interior. "Rawlings Hall of Fame Flannel [size] 44" tagging appears at interior collar. The ultra-short sleeves are pure Campy, as any examination of period photography will substantiate. This is, quite literally, a perfect example of one of the most important jerseys of 1950's New York City baseball. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
