The finest Cobb single in existence!

1953 Ty Cobb Single Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA Gem Mint 10. "A ball bat is a wondrous weapon," Cobb once reported, and arguably none in the sport's history have been as proficient in its use. Though Pete Rose famously knocked the Peach from his perch in 1985, it's only fair to report that Charlie Hustle recorded 14,053 at bats compared to Cobb's 11,434. Had the Hall of Fame's first inductee kept his average pace through another 2,600 at bats to match Rose's chances, he'd be the sole member of the 5,000 Hit Club. Cobb remains the career leader with a .366 batting average, a record as safe as any in American sport.

There's every reason to believe that the offered baseball will likewise enjoy its unmatched supremacy for eternity, the only Cobb single to earn a Gem Mint 10 assessment from the hobby's premier authentication and grading service. We report that Cobb's blue ink side panel autograph, underscored by an "11/24/53" date, garnered a 10/10 rating, while the gleaming white "Rawlings Special League" ball is assessed at 9/10. But, as is common practice at PSA/DNA, the elite aesthetics were deemed worthy of a half-point "bump" to the joint calculation, elevating the pristine relic to the absolute pinnacle of the grading hierarchy.

An included 1995 letter of provenance reads, in part, "This is to verify the Ty Cobb signed baseball you purchased...was signed in front of me by Ty Cobb when he visited the Rawlings offices in St. Louis. I was an executive for Rawlings at the time and have been in possession of the ball since."

We are unaware of any Babe Ruth single achieving PSA/DNA's highest assessment, but we can report that a Mint+ 9.5 example garnered over $388,000 in our August 2012 Platinum Night auction, a figure it would surely surpass were it to take another turn on the block today. The best-of-the-best has always been the safest bet in sports collectibles investment, so we expect to see plenty of "smart money" chasing this singular specimen. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Gem Mint 10. Letter of provenance from Rawlings executive.
