1952 Bowman Willie Mays #218 SGC Mint 9. "Maybe I was born to play ball, Maybe I truly was," said the man that many persons call the best player they ever saw - Willie Mays. It's hard to think of any player who possessed baseball's five tools better than Hall of Famer Mays. In 1952, Mays was coming off his NL Rookie of the Year season, as he helped his New York Giants to the 1951 pennant in their miracle comeback against the Dodgers. As the Giants began the 1952 season, the Korean Conflict was continuing, and Mays had been drafted. Maybe that weighed on him as he played in 33 games and hit merely .236. In the Army, Mays mostly played baseball with other servicemen who were professional players.

Willie came back in 1954, the Giants won another pennant, and in the World Series in Game 1 against Cleveland, Mays caught a drive to deep center with an over-the-shoulder catch, immortalized as "The Catch," that saved the game, and the Giants later swept the Series. Mays went to San Francisco with the Giants and ended his career back in New York with the Mets. His honors include: 2-time NL MVP, 1-time Batting Title, 24-time All-Star, and 12-time Gold Glover. Mays hit .302 lifetime, with 660 home runs - at his retirement second only to Ruth.

In 1952, Bowman and Topps were at war. In '51, Topps' initial baseball foray was modest, but now Topps was signing many young players, and the Bowman issue became smaller, going from 324 cards to 252. The cards featured art-colored reproductions of B&W photos. Since many of the backs were next to the gum in five-cent or one-cent packs, staining of backs is an issue and makes cards very rare in high grades. Graded SGC Mint 9. One of only two graded MINT with none rated higher.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
