The Mick officially becomes a Yank!

1951 Mickey Mantle Player's Contract Assignment to the New York Yankees. First sold in 2005 to actor Charlie Sheen for $996,000, who sold it again in 2017 for $2.3 million, the official transfer documents that sent George Herman "Babe" Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees after the 1919 season is widely and properly considered the most significant document in the vast archives of our national pastime. For the buyers, the transaction brought about a glorious era of domination that would last for the better part of a half century. For the sellers, the result was a merciless curse that rejected exorcism for nearly nine decades.

One can't help but recall that historic player transfer when examining the offered example which likewise officially welcomed one of the Mount Rushmore figures of Yankees history into the pinstriped fold. Though Mantle's official association with the Yankees franchise had begun with his discovery at age seventeen--his 1949 Independence Yankees (Kansas/Oklahoma/Missouri League) signing bonus check commanded a winning bid of $286,800 in our February 2013 Platinum Night auction--this simple document is the one that made the Mick a Major Leaguer, on April 15, 1951.

Mantle would waste no time in impressing, making his debut with the Bronx Bombers that same day in a spring training showdown with the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field. Though the Bums would pull out the victory with a late scoring surge, the nineteen-year old newbie thoroughly abused Dodgers pitching, going four-for-five from both sides of the plate with a 340-foot homer over the thirty-eight foot right field screen. The New York Daily News was glowing in its praise, casting Mantle as "The Greatest Rookie of the Generation."

Two days later, Mantle made his regular season debut against the Yankees' other storied rival, going one-for-four with an RBI against a visiting Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium and setting course for a career that would include seven World Championships, twenty All-Star Games, three American League MVP Awards, a 1956 Triple Crown, and immortality in both Yankee Stadium's Monument Park and the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The enormously significant single-page document between the "Binghamton Exhibition Company, Inc." (the organizing body of the Yankees farm system) and the "New York Yankees, Inc." transfers "Mickey Mantle" for a sum of $25,000. The covenant is signed at bottom by the business manager of the farm system and Hall of Fame Yankees executive George Weiss in bold ink. A pair of stamps from the commissioner's office date to within ten days of the transaction. Page is a standard 11x8.5" in dimension, with original storage folds but no condition issues otherwise. The document derives from the collection of a Yankees executive. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
