Arguably the finest Cobb single on Earth

1950's Ty Cobb Single Signed Career Retrospective Baseball. Famously quoted as saying, "When I came to Detroit, I was just a mild-mannered Sunday school boy," the iconic Georgia Peach would fuel himself with a steady diet of anger and determination in the years to follow to metamorphose into the sport's most terrifying figure. The dark knight of the first quarter of the twentieth century game, Cobb was baseball's Machiavellian ideal, claiming power and respect through the clenched iron fist rather than the open hand of friendship.

This specific format of Official American League (Harridge) baseball found the Hall of Fame's first resident in the evening of his life, looking back on a long and fruitful career. Cobb fills a side panel of the sphere with his blue fountain pen ink inscription, underscoring a bold signature with text reading:

    "Detroit 1905 to 1926, Athletics 1927 & 1928, Finis [French: The End]."

While special notations have become "de rigueur" in the modern hobby, Cobb's passing in 1961 predated this trend by decades, a fact that all but assures that this is the only example of its kind that exists, or ever has existed. In this context, the spectacular condition of the relic seems almost superfluous, the blue fountain pen ink retaining 9/10 boldness beneath a masterfully applied clear coat. The result is a Cobb single that ranks with the finest autographed spheres we've had the privilege to offer. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
