On the brink of pinstriped immortality...

1950 Joplin (MO) Miners Team Signed Photograph with Mickey Mantle. A year older and twenty pounds heavier than he had been during his unsteady first season in the Yankees farm system with the 1949 Class D Independence Yankees, Mickey Mantle got his first taste of fame with the 1950 Joplin Miners, dazzling the locals with twenty-six homers, 136 RBI's and the Western Association batting title at a soaring .383 average. "You guys got to see this kid we have in camp," fellow pinstriped legend Bill Dickey said of the young prospect. "Out of Class C ball, hits 'em both ways, five hundred feet, both ways! You've got to see him!"

And see him we do, standing third from right in the middle row of this charming team photo snapped at Joplin's Joe Becker Stadium, where children in 1950 commonly held up signs beyond the outfield fence reading, "Mick Hit It Here!" His blue ink autograph adorns his chest at 7/10 strength, a point better than the average of his teammates' signatures. Note that this signature variation is the rarest and most desirable of all Mantle models, slowly morphing into a distinctively different construction by 1954.

The photo measures a standard 8x10" in size and offers only a small bend at upper left corner, well clear of all subjects and signatures, in terms of condition issues. Matting and framing completes the dimensions at 14x16". Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
