    Description

1950-51 Toleteros Joshua Gibson SGC 80 EX/NM 6. The Toleteros cards are a Puerto Rican issue. This one particularly can be noted for its issuance of a Joshua Gibson card three years after he had died. Perhaps the card company or the Puerto Rican fans felt this was the best display to canonize the man who made such a contribution to their baseball world. After all, more than sixty years later Gibson still holds the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League record with a .480 batting average established in 1941-42. Although the bulk of his career was played in the Negro Leagues, he spent several professional seasons playing there. He was idolized by fans in Puerto Rico and considered his play there as the high point of his career. This is the third best grade specimen found in the SGC population report that has only eleven ever submitted. The image is clear and the centering as perfect as it gets. There is only one noticeable edge ding on the lower left border. The reverse depicts a blank back, unmarred by staining or any other marks.
