1949 Bowman Roy Campanella #84 PSA Mint 9 - Only Two Higher. There's a poignant irony about Hall of Famer Roy Campanella having a 1949 rookie card. Unlike other great Negro League catchers like Josh Gibson and Biz Mackey, who never had a chance in Major League baseball, Roy Campanella did get that chance, but not until he was twenty-six years old. He had begun catching professionally when he was only fifteen.

Roy grew up in the Nicetown section of Philadelphia and played ball relentlessly. Hall of Fame catcher Biz Mackey discovered Roy and made an arrangement with Roy's parents that Roy could play with the Washington (later Baltimore) Elite Giants, managed by Mackey, at first on weekends. Mackey poured his veteran's knowledge into his protégé's head. After playing in Mexico and the Caribbean, as well with the Elite Giants, Roy signed, soon after Jackie Robinson, to play with the Brooklyn Dodger organization. After two minor league seasons, he made his Major League debut in 1948. Roy later became the first-string catcher and handled the Dodger pitchers, not easy when some white pitchers of the time might resent taking orders from an African-American man. Roy handled it with aplomb. Campy won three MVPs, and helped the Brooklyn Dodgers to their lone World Series win in 1955.

Once Campy said, "I never want to quit playing ball. They'll have to cut this uniform off of me to get me to stop." Sadly, that's what practically happened. In January of 1958, an auto accident left him paralyzed. He eventually returned in a wheelchair to work for the Los Angeles Dodgers in various capacities, including mentoring some of their young players. Great opportunity to add this iconic Hall of Fame Brooklyn Dodger. Graded PSA Mint 9. Only two have rated higher.
