1949 Bowman Roy Campanella #84 PSA Gem Mint 10. The rookie card of three-time National League MVP Roy Campanella constitutes the heart of a Brooklyn Dodgers collection. An accomplished Negro Leaguer who made the transition to the majors at the age of 27, the Hall of Fame catcher was instrumental in the franchise's "glory years" between 1949 and 1956 -- not coincidentally, the same period of Campy's active big league service. The legendary player seemed unstoppable, and only an off-the-field tragedy was able to put a halt to the building of his almost superhuman résumé of baseball accomplishment.Graded PSA Gem MT 10. Just two copies -- within a 1,100-piece, PSA-graded census -- have achieved this above all else tier. This cornerstone collectible projects outstanding color and crystal-clear photo resolution -- a seldom-seen feat in the often subdued, or even dismal-looking, '49 Bowman issue -- and its untoned borders display apparently micrometer-aligned proportions. Factory-fresh "rough cuts" adorn the sides, and the card's front and back surfaces appear to have never been touched by human hands. A remarkable card that every Campanella or '49 Bowman enthusiast must have.
