1949 Bowman Bob Lemon #238 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher. Displayed is the rookie card of Bob Lemon, a baseball lifer who was a great pitcher as well as a man who could hit, run, field and manage. After breaking into the Majors as a third baseman for a few games at the end of both the 1940 and '41 seasons, Lemon served three years during World War II with the U.S. Navy. He was in the Majors to stay at the beginning of the 1946 season, and was the Opening Day center-fielder as the Indians' Bob Feller was working on a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth against the Chicago White with a man on second. Lemon saved the day when he raced to his left and made a diving catch, and then doubled off the base runner. It was a catch Feller called, "The best outfield catch I have ever seen." Lemon wasn't hitting enough to stay as a regular outfielder, and so the Indians switched him to the mound, as he had been both a pitcher/position player all his life. Lemon was an immediate and long-term success. He won at least 20 games seven times. From 1949 through 1954, he was part of the Indians' "Big Four" starters. This group included Feller, Early Wynn, and Lemon, all Hall of Famers, and Mike Garcia, an excellent pitcher in his own right who had a lifetime 142-97 record.

Lemon could do it all, and he won many games because of his all-around abilities. He could hit as well as some regulars, he had speed, and he was a great fielder - he was a 5-time AL leader for pitchers in put-outs, assists, and range factor. He helped Cleveland to win the 1948 World Series over the Boston Braves with a 2-0 record and a 1.65 ERA, and he was also in the World Series in 1954. He pitched a no-hitter over the Detroit Tigers, and he finished with a lifetime 207-128 record with a 3.28 ERA. Lemon managed for nine seasons with three teams, and his 1978 New York Yankees won the World Series. This colorful card of a very youthful Lemon is a condition rarity. Graded PSA Mint 9. One of only three graded MINT with none rated higher.
