    Description

1948 Leaf Satchel Paige #8 PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop Five, None Higher! The '48 Leaf Satchell Paige card is famous for its "short-print" status, confirmed by the accounting of his abridged census numbers. While quantity accounts for some of the stunted availability, the popularity that Mr. Paige holds in the collecting community is certainly a factor as owners of this classic card are incredulous to the thought of ever letting it go. It's also important to stress the significance of the issue itself in the evolution of the hobby, the first post-war breed to feature color imagery. The bright and bold design brings to mind the powerful aesthetics found in Soviet propaganda posters or Andy Warhol screenprints.

Mr. Paige famously mused, "Don't look back--something might be gaining on you." Here one can not help but look back as the new owner of this high-grade trading card finds little competition for equals and all others fail to approach its unquestioned supremacy. The remarkable state of preservation after nearly seven decades of existence serves as a rather fitting tribute to the ageless Hall of Fame ace, who was still mowing them down as a forty-two-year old rookie for the World Champion 1948 Cleveland Indians. Bowman failed to honor the Negro Leagues' greatest arm in their 1948 edition, further elevating the importance of this, Paige's sole rookie specimen.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. One of five in NM-MT with none rated higher. A physical examination worthy of the elevated PSA label which leaves us with little to nothing to report beyond a list of superlatives common to NM-MT cards. Few rookie cards of Hall of Famers active beyond the Second World War present a greater challenge at this elite grade level. We have found not a single entry in any auction catalog or online of this card graded by SGC or PSA in NM-MT to have ever been offered at public auction before and Heritage is more than proud to be the first.
