Ruth's wife and author of the book among the signers!
1947 Babe Ruth & Others Multi-Signed Baseball Commemorating "The
Babe Ruth Story" Movie Contract. Though you'll find no film
critics arguing that this Bambino biopic was a cinema classic, "The
Babe Ruth Story" starring William Bendix as the titular baseball
icon continues to loom large in sports history more than seven
decades after its production. As most Ruth collectors are aware,
the July 26, 1948 film premier in Manhattan would prove to be the
Hall of Fame slugger's final public appearance, as he would succumb
to terminal throat cancer only three weeks later.
Presented is a thrilling relic that commemorates the signing of the
contract that would transform Ruth's autobiography into the motion
picture that would serve as the Babe's final farewell. The OAL
(Harridge) baseball provides a magnificent sweet spot signature
from the dying legend, easily a 9/10 if you forgive the errant
brush of Ruth's hand against the wet ink at the very end. His wife
Claire is 8/10 on the panel to his left. To Ruth's right, we find
the autograph of lawyer William B. Jaffe, whose family consigned
this ball to auction. We believe that the writing above his
signature is an inscription as it appears to be in the same hand,
but whether it is that or another signature, we cannot decipher
it.
The same is true for two of the three autographs on an adjacent
panel, but the middle signature is very clearly that of Bob
Considine, who authored the book of the same name from which the
film derived. Lastly, apparently in Jaffe's hand, there is a
handwritten notation which reads, "Signing of deal with Monogram
Pictures, Ruth in Films" with a scribbled 1947 date. Ball is
lightly and evenly toned throughout, presenting beautifully.
