1946-48 Bill Bevens Game Worn New York Yankees Uniform, MEARS A10. Though he'd play just four Major League seasons, each in the uniform of the New York Yankees, the name Bill Bevens has found permanence in the sport's lexicon due to one remarkable performance, and an even more remarkable bit of bad luck. In a Fall Classic performance second only to Don Larsen's 1956 perfecto, Bevens pitched eight and two-third innings of no-hit ball at Ebbets Field in the fourth game of the 1947 World Series, only to surrender a two-out walk-off double to Dodgers pinch hitter Cookie Lavagetto that brought home the tying and winning run to even the Series at two games apiece. With a single swing, Bevens was transformed from the first no-hit pitcher in World Series history to hard luck one-hit loser.

Presented is a road grey flannel jersey and pants worn by Bevens. Though originally marketed as the uniform sported by Bevens that fateful day, due in large part to a letter from Bevens himself claiming this association, period photography disproves the contention and identifies this as a different, authentic road set. As the MEARS A10 rating illustrates, the uniform is 100% original and unaltered, with a bold navy "New York" spanning the jersey's chest and number "16" applied similarly to verso. Interior collar is tagged "Wilson [size] 46" above an embroidered "Bevens" swatch. Blue sharpie signature appears at interior collar, placed so as to be hidden from view when jersey is buttoned.

Matching pants are similarly tagged, with "Wilson [size] 42" label and embroidered name swatch at interior waistband, and a blue sharpie signature at interior pocket. MEARS characterizes the uniform's game wear as moderate, strongly suggesting wear in either 1946 or 1947, though Bevens is listed as number "16" on the 1948 Yankees roster despite seeing no action that season. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
