    Description

1941 Play Ball Pee Wee Reese #54 PSA Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher. The only Brooklyn Dodger to participate in all seven Subway Series against the New York Yankees, this Hall of Fame shortstop would see his first such confrontation during his rookie card's year of issue. That important, pastel-hued collectible was issued as number fifty-four in the 1941 Play Ball set. But, although Reese survived his World War II service to close out Ebbets Field with the other "Boys of Summer," Gum, Incorporated - manufacturer of the Play Ball series - wasn't so lucky: Play Ball production ceased following the '41 effort, which was the only one of its three products that featured full color in its design.

The availability of surviving cards from this set is believed to be partially attributable to paper drives held to benefit the war effort, but somewhat limited production runs and the approaching seventieth anniversary of the issue are also obvious culprits. And, with just seventy-two cards in the series compared to more-challenging 161- and 240-card totals of the preceding two, it's likely and logical that kids purchased fewer packs owing to the decreased difficulty of completing sets.

Graded PSA Mint 9. From a total population approaching the 600 submissions level, this is one of only two the earn the MINT rating with none higher. The Hall of Famers populating the '41 Play Ball set ensure bounteous "star power," but Reese stands as the lone rookie among these, and his card ranks behind only those of Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams in terms of value and for many, desirability. Ironically, each of those superstar cards are more common in high grade than this Reese. Points here are lost only to the gentlest signs of edge and corner wear, and the perfectly centered, nicely focused image shows no distractions of any kind.
