1939 Play Ball Ted Williams #92 SGC NM-MT+ 8.5 - Pop Four, None Higher. Presented is the rookie card of Ted Williams. One day, Sunday September 28, 1941, tells us plenty about Williams. On Friday, an off-day in Philadelphia, Ted was hitting .401. In answer to a question about sitting out the final three games against the Athletics to protect his over .400 average, he said, "I either make it or I don't." His 1-for-4 Saturday dropped his average to a .3995 mark. If he sat out the meaningless last two games of the season on Sunday, his average would be rounded up and officially listed as .400. Ted talked about why he wanted to play on Sunday, "I want to have more than my toenails on that line," Williams explained. Williams put it all on that line and went 4-for-5 in the first game, and 6-for-8 on the day to finish at .406, eighty years ago, and the last time anyone in MLB hit .400. The Hall of Famer spent five years of his prime in the service as a pilot, and yet he still put-up great numbers - a lifetime average of .344, a 6-time batting leader, a 2-time Triple Crown winner, a 2-time MVP, and a 19-time All-Star who finished with 521 homers.

The 1939 Play Ball cards were produced by Gum, Inc, of Philadelphia, a forerunner of Bowman Gum. There were 161 cards issued. Card #126 was never issued, some think deliberately to spur sales, while some think it was an honest mistake. The front simply has a B&W photo with a white border. The back contains the player's name, card number, personal info and a bio. Very scarce in higher grades. Graded SGC NM-MT+ 8.5. One of four graded NM-MT+ by SGC with none higher.
