1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 SGC Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher! There's no questioning the way Babe Ruth dominated baseball, but he did have some help, specifically by the powerful, stoic man usually hitting cleanup behind him, the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig. Ruth walloped 714 lifetime homers, and in two separate years he out-homered every other team in the AL. What helped Ruth get at least some good pitches was the threat of Gehrig on-deck. The lefty swinging first baseman hit 493 career home runs, and had 1,995 RBI. Gehrig was a 2-time MVP winner, won a Triple Crown, hit .340 lifetime and was a part of six World Series championships. The Hall of Famer held the MLB consecutive games record at 2,130 for 56-years until Cal Ripken Jr. broke it in 1995. Gehrig played hurt and sick many times, and was a steady presence in contrast to Ruth's incandescent persona. "I'm not a headline guy," said Gehrig. "I know that as long as I was following [Babe] Ruth to the plate, I could have stood on my head, and no one would have noticed the difference." Gehrig's streak and life were cut short by ALS, and he passed away in 1941.

The 1933 Goudey issue broke new ground as the first bubble gum baseball card set. The cards are 2-3/8" by 2-7/8". The issue advertised 240 cards, but fell short by one as Nap Lajoie's card #106 was not issued in 1933, some allege purposely to spur sales. In 1934, the #106 was sent for free to anyone who requested it. Gehrig's colorized artistic image, based on a 1927 photo by famous photographer Charles Conlon, shows the muscular Gehrig drawn back, ready to unleash his powerful swing. There is another identically imaged Gehrig card (#160) in the set. Scarce in high grade. Graded SGC Mint 9. One of three graded MINT with none rated higher!
