Description

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #181 SGC 60 EX 5. Babe Ruth's status in baseball was well conveyed with his four appearances in the R319 Goudey edition from 1933. Gehrig managed to appear only twice plus Goudey saw fit to use the same illustration twice. Card #181 pictures the Babe holding his trusty lumber, gazing upward from within a highly detailed portrait. This could easily be a brief, quiet moment for Ruth, sitting on clubhouse steps, watching the current Yankee batter, torn between placing the ball into the left, center or right field stands. This is an eye-catching copy of one of the hobby's more desirable Ruth collectibles. Graded SGC 60 EX 5 the card exhibits clean, white borders which surround a striking image placed just to the right of center with perfect print registration (a treat with this card). There is but light wear to corner tips with one showing a slight bit of fuzziness. The reverse offers a nicely struck print in that unmistakable Goudey green ink, undeterred by a slight smudge. Even the traditional reverse print ghosting (overkill from the sheet placed under this one) is minimal. For the baseball card fan with the desire to own a piece of history.
