    Description

1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 PSA EX-MT 6. More than a century ago, "The Babe," who many believe is baseball's GOAT, made his MLB debut in 1914 as a left-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. When sociologists engage in a nature versus nurture debate as to the origins of excellence, Babe Ruth would be an ideal example of a combination of nature and nurture to produce phenomenal performance. As for nature, Babe was gifted with size, as well as exceptional strength and hand-eye coordination. As for nurture, Babe grew up at St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore where his mentor was 6'6" Brother Matthias, whose powerful uppercut swing was copied by his protégé. Baseball was big at St. Mary's, and for years Babe played about 40 games a month from March through October. In MLB, Ruth had a pitching record of 94-46 with a 2.28 ERA. He moved to the outfield and joined the Yankees, and in both 1920 and '27, he hit more homers than any other team in the AL. The inaugural Hall of Famer's 60-homer single season mark and 714 career homer mark were once sacrosanct. He hit .342 lifetime, and once, when criticized for making more money than President Hoover, the non-plussed Ruth replied, "I had a better year...."
The 1933 Goudey issue was produced in the Great Depression, when spending money was scarce for many boys, yet the cards were a success, and are now iconic. At 2-3/8" by 2-7/8", they were much larger than earlier cards. Ruth had four cards in the supposedly 240-card set (card #106, Nap Lajoie, wasn't released until 1934). The cards have colorful hand-drawn portraits that pop, on much thicker cardboard stock than cigarette cards. Graded PSA EX-MT 6.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
