Description

A forty-ounce monster!

1930-31 Babe Ruth Game Used Bat, PSA/DNA GU 8.5. Tipping the scales at just a few grams under forty ounces, the presented signature model Hillerich & Bradsby will evoke the spirit of the Babe as soon as you grip the handle and feel the heft of the barrel testing your wrists. It's no mere baseball bat--it's like Paul Bunyan's ax, the stuff of folklore. A full half-pound heavier than the lumber used by Barry Bonds to establish his controversial 2001 single season record, this bat delivers us to that Golden Age of Yankee Stadium's first decade in a way that few other artifacts could muster. Like Ruth himself, and his countless exploits that tread that pinstripe between fact and fiction, it's a relic that's simply larger than life.

Leading game used bat expert John Taube was able to narrow the production range of this thirty-five inch (35") war club to a two-season span that saw Ruth retain his command of the American (and Major) League home run titles, with forty-nine and forty-six in 1930 and 1931 respectively. These would prove to be the last of his dozen appearances atop that elite slugging leaderboard. Likewise best in baseball were his slugging percentages of .732 and .700. In short, this bat did some serious work.

And it clearly shows in the punished grain of the left barrel, correct for Ruth who batted left-handed with a label-down posture. Here we find a heaping helping of ball and cleat marks, with early signs of grain separation from the punishment. A small grain section of the top barrel has been repaired, and small surface cracks on the front barrel are the result of drying. Yet despite the long and productive service to its master, the bat remains uncracked.

There are few artifacts in any subgenre of the collectibles world more thoroughly American than a Babe Ruth game used bat. The most celebrated practitioner of our national pastime was the epitome of the American dream, emerging from a Baltimore orphanage to become the most famous man on Earth. This is the tool with which he carved his immortality, and its a relic that continues to inspire to present day. LOA from PSA/DNA, GU 8.5.
