Description

1926 Babe Ruth Single Signed Baseball. Babe Ruth had quite a bit to prove in 1926. The year before, Ruth was forced to the sideline because of the "bellyache heard 'round the world." Things ended badly as The Bambino was suspended in September for insubordination. During the offseason Ruth rededicated himself. While we are sure he still had his fair share of hot dogs, beer and women, the Bambino was some thirty pounds lighter in 1926. His season nearly resulted in a Triple Crown as he blasted forty-seven home runs, drove in 153 and finished with a robust .372 average. Besides Heinie Manush's .378 batting mark, Ruth had top numbers in all three statistical categories. On to the Fall Classic, Ruth became the first player in the history of the prestigious event to homer three times in one game, doing so in Game 4. He homered in the decisive contest, but representing the potential tying run with Lou Gehrig at the plate was gunned down on a stolen base attempt to end the series.

Once again, The Babe was the toast of the town and regained his perch atop the baseball world. This baseball was originally distributed as a party souvenir by a local newspaper given the stamping: "Dispatch-Pioneer Press Babe Ruth Party June 16, 1926." That day the Yankees were beaten by the St. Louis Browns 7-5 as Ruth took the collar in five at-bats. We assume the ball was signed later that day. While toned, the side panel signature still radiates at a quality of 8/10 against the horsehide. Also worth mentioning, is Ruth's use of quote marks around his signature. Not long after this ball was signed, he ceased using quote marks thus qualifying this as an "earlier" career signature. Overall, a fine single from the hobby's most essential name.
