    Description

Just weeks into his fabled streak!

1925 Lou Gehrig Signed New York Yankees Rookie Payroll Check, PSA/DNA Mint 9. While Gehrig did enjoy a brief, late-season debut with the 1923 World Championship Yankees, and ten more appearances with the 1924 edition, it was in 1925 that the Iron Horse was fully released from the Bronx paddock, beginning on June first of that season a consecutive games streak bested only once in baseball history. Ripken's improbable ascension to the durability throne has done nothing to diminish Gehrig's remarkable achievement, and collectors are properly drawn to those few relics dating to the first steps of that marathon march.

We present just such a relic here, the earliest Gehrig payroll check ever to appear on the hobby's auction block according to our various results databases. Bearing the signatures of fellow pinstriped Hall of Famers Ed Barrow and Jacob Ruppert on the front, the check is made payable to "Louis Gehrig," resulting in a signature variation for the endorsement on verso that we've never previously encountered. That remarkable early black ink beauty earns every point of its lofty Mint 9 rating.

A vertical center fold line and general handling and storage wear do not impede upon Gehrig's youthful autograph, while just a single dot from the cancellation punch coding skims the edge of one letter. Certainly this ranks among the most desirable Gehrig checks in the hobby, a stellar representation by any method of evaluation. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Mint 9.
