1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig SGC VG 3 - His Rookie Card Debut! The Iron Horse, an archaic expression for a steam locomotive, has left the station. The 1925 Exhibit Lou Gehrig (The Iron Horse) spectacular rookie card is rolling along as collectors jump aboard, as in recent years the hobby has discovered the long overlooked and undervalued Exhibits cards. And the Iron Horse is rolling ahead. The baseball Iron Horse, while at A-Ball Hartford, had cups of coffee with the New York Yankees in both 1923 and 1924. In a total of 38 at bats, he hit a robust .447. This combined with hitting .369 with 37 homers at Hartford in 1924 meant Gehrig was building up steam. By 1925, he was with the big club, hardly playing until on June 2, 1925 first baseman Wally Pipp took himself from the line-up because of a bad headache. Gehrig, who had pinch hit the day before, started in Pipp's place, and never missed a game until the end of his 2,130-game streak.
Graded SGC VG 3. There is still time to jump on the 1925 Exhibits Lou Gehrig train. These cards were often sold from machines at arcades at amusement parks. They are getting close to a hundred years old. You could own a Gehrig rookie from the year he began The Streak. It could be a ticket to ride. When the Iron Horse was still at the station back in 2008, an example sold at auction for $6,293.34. Roll down the tracks to more recent years, in 2016 Heritage sold an example graded PSA EX-MT 6 (MK) for a record $102,000. As Yankee Hall of Famer Phil Rizzuto would say, "Holy cow!"
