One of the earliest photos of the Iron Horse in pinstripes!

1924 Lou Gehrig Rookie Original News Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. For the better part of two seasons the stocky first baseman had seen his fanbase swell at the Hartford Senators home park of Clarkin Field, where his prodigious home run clouts had earned him the nickname, "the Eastern Babe," after the Eastern League in which Hartford competed. In 504 plate appearances in 1924 prior to that telephone call from the Bronx, Gehrig had launched thirty-seven round-trippers while batting a sizzling .369 and slugging nearly one hundred points better than the next closest Eastern Leaguer.

So it's little wonder why the Yankees were anxious to put those talents to their most lucrative effect, adorning New York's native son in Big League pinstripes. Very few images predating the start of Gehrig's legendary consecutive games streak in 1925 exist, and this is one of the most famous of that narrow supply. Another copy of this photograph was sold with a paper caption still affixed that establishes the derivation as March 14, 1924 spring training in New Orleans. This predates his elevation to daily Yankees service.

The photo, capturing the blurry speed of Gehrig's bat, measures 8.75x6.5" in size and bears stamping on verso from "Underwood & Underwood, N.Y." A small border chip at upper left is the only condition issue worthy of mention, thus simple matting and framing will provide a virtual Near Mint appearance. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
