Description

1923 Lou Gehrig Original News Photograph--First Image in a Yankees Uniform, PSA/DNA Type 1. Extraordinary image finds the most faithful servant in Yankees franchise history donning the pinstripes for the very first time. The paper caption on verso sets the scene:

"Yanks sign Columbia University Baseball Player. Lou Gehrig, of Columbia University's baseball team, who has showed great form this season, batting around 400, was added to the Yankee roster today (6-11-23). Photo shows Lou Gehrig in his new uniform of the 'Yankees.'"

Certainly one of the most significant photos known from over a century of New York American League history, this seminal artifact captures the first rays from the dawning of a new era. Gehrig's first appearance would come four days later. With the paint still wet on the brand new Yankee Stadium behind him, and the franchise's first World Championship still months in the future, the piece is utterly drenched in significance. We report only light handling and storage wear, with no significant points of distraction. Dimensions 6.5x8.5". LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.

Best-In-Class Expert Analysis/Summary:

Like trading cards and other collectibles, vintage photos follow a similar rule regarding the added appeal of those that date to a player's rookie season or debut. In this case, the paper caption on the verso confirms that this is not only a Lou Gehrig photo from his rookie year or game debut; it was his first day with the team. It reads as follows:

"Yanks Sign Columbia University Baseball Player. Lou Gehrig, of Columbia University's baseball team, who has shown great form this season, batting around .500, was added to the Yankee roster today (6-11-23). Photo shows, Lou Gehrig in his new uniform of the 'Yankees."

Gehrig would make his major league debut just a few days later, and the Yankees would christen their new stadium by winning the World Series just a few months after that. The historical importance of the photo is further complemented by its outstanding overall condition and terrific eye appeal due to its captivating clarity. The full-body shot of Gehrig swinging his bat while wearing pinstripes captures the soon-to-be icon before he ever recorded a hit or played first base for the franchise. More importantly, Gehrig's consecutive games streak had yet to start, so the image predates the birth of The Iron Horse.
