    Description

Hall of Fame hardware from the very first "Subway Series!"

1921 New York Giants World Series Championship Pendant Presented to Johnny Evers. When this Hall of Fame middle infielder made his professional debut for the minor league Troy Trojans of the Class-B New York State League, he carried less than one hundred pounds on his five-foot nine-inch frame, and he'd never crest 130 throughout a storied career that led him to the gates of Cooperstown. But this lanky legend would claim three World Championships during his playing days--twice as the pivot man of the legendary double-play combination that carried the Chicago Cubs to glory in 1907 and 1908, and then again with the Miracle Braves of 1914 during his sole National League MVP campaign.

The offered treasure derives from Evers' brief service as a member of fellow Hall of Fame icon John McGraw's coaching staff in 1921, a season that marked the first of three consecutive Fall Classic battles between the New York Giants and their pinstriped Polo Grounds tenants, and the first of fourteen "Subway Series" to date.

The Giants would innovate the first World Championship ring in 1922, so this gorgeous gold pendant marks a closing bookend of sorts (though rings would not become the enduring standard until 1926). It's an absolute beauty of jewelry design from the fabled house of Dieges & Clust, which fashioned championship awards and World Series press pins for Big Apple baseball for decades.

The face features a female victory form holding a laurel wreath and a shield inset with a genuine quarter-karat diamond. We particularly love the tiny figural baseballs atop each vine-wrapped column. Text reads, "Giants, World's Champions, 1921." On verso, text reads, "Presented to John J. Evers by the Commissioner of Baseball." Maker's mark and "14K" text appears below. Condition is marvelous, with minor handling and storage wear only apparent upon the closest of inspection. Weight is twenty-nine grams (29 g.).
