Description
One of the boldest known examples on horsehide!
1920's Christy Mathewson Signed Baseball. In the rough and
tumble Dead Ball Era of our national pastime, when the sport was
populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was
recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was
for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. As commissioner Kenesaw
Mountain Landis famously eulogized the fallen baseball hero, "He
was an inspiration to everybody, and may we have more of his kind."
The 373-game winning right-hander autographed this sphere shortly
before his death at age forty-five.This early passing, and the ninety-five years that have since elapsed, have conspired to deny the collecting hobby of all but a meager few autograph exemplars, particularly on the hide of a baseball. In fact, one could easily count all Matty singles sold during the twenty-first century on his hands and feet with digits to spare.
Admittedly, this impressive relic is not officially counted among that skimpy population, as the experts find what appear to be remnants of a signature removal above the ball's "Bon Tober" logo stamping. They also note a few slight enhancements to the Mathewson signature itself. PSA/DNA declined to authenticate the autograph.
It is our duty to report the findings of authenticators rather than to judge those findings, but certainly there will be those who disagree with either or both of those assessments. Were there no controversy whatsoever, this beauty would climb into six figures without breaking a sweat. Matty's sweet spot application has paled only minimally in the many decades since its application, fully capable of taking a place beside fellow inaugural class Hall of Fame singles that are far simpler to locate in quality condition. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
