1920 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball from Muddy Ruel's House--Only Known Example! UPDATE: This lot comes with a Full LOA from PSA/DNA

After the Black Sox scandal of 1919, Major League Baseball needed a fix. The Boston Red Sox provided a savior when they sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in December of 1919, a transaction considered the most consequential in the history of American sports. The new decade began with a new commissioner, a livelier ball, and a dynasty in the making.

The historic orb presented here is the only known example of its kind, commemorating the pinstriped debut of the man who would come to define the New York Yankees franchise. OAL (Johnson) baseball is adorned with twenty Bombers, including Babe Ruth (atop a side panel with "Babe" in quotes), Lefty O'Doul, Carl Mays, Wally Pipp, Roger Peckinpaugh (twice), Bob Meusel, Jack Quinn, Ping Bodie, Fred Hoffmann, Aaron Ward, Hank Thormahlen, Bob Shawkey, Ray French, Ernie Shore, and Frank Gleich. Some names present a challenge to decipher.

The league stamp is still very bold and blue. The ball, which was treated with a light coat of shellac, has toned evenly to a grayish color. There is one noticeable abrasion to a side panel which does not compromise any of the more significant autographs. The signatures average 4/10 with the Sultan coming in at 5/10.

Our consignor's parents purchased Muddy Ruel's home in Cleveland Heights, Ohio in 1951 and discovered a box of autographed baseballs (seven of which are in this auction) in a closet drawer, including this baseball, all of which he has safeguarded since that time. The consignor's letter of provenance (with a copy of the deed to the house) accompanies this lot. Letter of provenance from Michael Barry (with copy of the deed to the house). Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
