    Description

1920 Babe Ruth Original Large Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. Wow.

Is this the best early Yankees image of Babe Ruth ever captured? That's our position until the highly unlikely proof to the contrary is supplied. Clearly the photographer and renowned cinematographer Ned Van Buren was duly proud of his creation, as we find his signature at lower left, his handwritten "1920" notation assuring that this is, indeed, an image from the Bambino's debut season in pinstripes.

Behind him, the elegant curves of the Polo Grounds provide a gauzy backdrop for the crystal-clear subject, looking svelte and perfectly deserving of his famous nickname. Pencil notations on back confirm the elite vintage. Remarkably, particularly for a print of such commanding size (13.5x10.5"), the century-old photo survives in glorious NRMT condition, ready to be housed in an elegant frame befitting its gallery-quality execution. A true masterpiece of baseball photography, and a matching bookend to the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Babe Bows Out," which likewise appears within this special auction. LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.
