Description
Winner of two games in 1919 World Series!
1919 "Honest" Dickey Kerr Signed Chicago White Sox Rookie
Player's Contract. There is arguably no more notorious brand in
American sports than the 1919 Chicago White Sox, a team relegated
to eternal infamy through a shady deal between disgruntled
employees of Charles Comiskey and a cabal of crooked gamblers
anxious to leverage that emotion to their own personal benefit. As
we approach the centennial of the official and enduring banishment
of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson and the rest of the "Eight Men Out,"
Heritage is pleased to present a document that reminds us that
there was another side to that gloomy tale.Presented is the contract that brought twenty-five-year old Richard Kerr into the Major Leagues and the center of its greatest scandal. His 212 innings of regular season work during that debut campaign placed him third behind Eddie Cicotte and Lefty Williams among ChiSox pitchers, the same two men that he followed as he took to the mound in Game Three of the 1919 World Series hoping to turn the tide after uncharacteristically poor showings from his staff mates.
The result was one of the finest games ever pitched in the Fall Classic, a three-hit shutout in which only two Reds managed to reach second base. None ventured further. Kerr was not quite as sharp in his Game Six return, allowing eleven hits, a pair of walks and a hit batter, but it was still good enough for an extra-innings 5-4 victory to stave off the elimination loss Lefty Williams would surrender in Game Eight.
Today, "Honest" Dickey Kerr continues to shine brightly against the backdrop of the Black Sox scandal, and the offered contract rates among the most significant to emerge from that dark closing chapter the Dead Ball Era. It survives in virtually pristine condition, with only original storage folds to report. The document is one sheet of paper folded into four 14x8.5" pages, documenting Charles Comiskey's legendary stinginess. The Hall of Fame owner and his new hire sign at the end of the document in bold black fountain pen ink, their signatures dated "this 22 day of March, A.D. 1919." Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
