    Description

    Population two, none superior!

1916 M101-4 Sporting News Joe Jackson #87 PSA NM-MT 8. He's one of the most complicated legends of our National Pastime, an illiterate child laborer from the mills of South Carolina who would emerge as one of the greatest ballplayers the world would ever see. But that popularity would ultimately fall to ignominy as Shoeless Joe was swept up in the greatest scandal in Major League history, sentenced by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to a term of banishment that is now approaching its centennial. But if baseball itself hasn't yet forgiven Jackson, the majority of baseball historians, and certainly hobbyists in the collectibles realm, have opened their arms and wallets for the famed Black Sox conspirator.

Jackson rose to prominence in the years following the release of the hobby's greatest and most populous tobacco issues, so he's unusually scarce in cardboard format among twentieth century players with more than a decade of Major League experience. But even within that woefully insufficient supply of Shoeless Joe trading cards, this remarkable example distinguishes itself. It is one of only two to garner a NM-MT 8 rating from the experts at PSA, the highest grade ever achieved for the card.

We see the reasons for this elite assessment in the remarkable state of preservation, the delicate little relic somehow escaping the common faults of handling and wear to survive in like-new condition. Printing is bold and well-registered in the obverse image and verso advertising text, surfaces clean. It quite literally doesn't get any better than this.
