    Description

1915 Boston Red Sox Pitching Staff with Rookie Babe Ruth Original News Photograph, PSA/DNA Type 1. "Ruth made a grave mistake when he gave up pitching," Tris Speaker told reporters in 1921 during a discussion about his former Red Sox teammate. "Working once a week, he might have lasted a long time and become a great star." The pair would reunite in 1939 on the dais in Cooperstown as members of the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The offered photo dates to the first World Championship season that Ruth and Speaker would share, a marvelous snapshot-sized (4x4.75") image of the pitching rotation that posted the third-highest winning percentage in BoSox franchise history. From left to right, we find Rube Foster, Carl Mays, Ernie Shore, Babe Ruth and Dutch Leonard. That's Jack Barry at far left, behind the line of pitchers.

These identifications are made in vintage pencil on the back along with a "10-7-15" date that would identify the location as the Polo Grounds, where the Sox fell in a meaningless regular season final contest to the Yankees. The World Series would begin in Philadelphia the next day. Various layers of "Underwood & Underwood" service stampings blend with the handwritten text.

Recent sales of photo postcards of this 1915 Red Sox team have reached six figures, so this pre-auction estimate should be considered quite conservative. Minor wear at edges and corners represent all condition issues, as the image area itself is entirely free of distractions. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1.
