    Description

    Golden boy!

1911 T205 Piedmont Christy Mathewson PSA NM-MT 8. Mathewson stands as a defining figure of the sport's Dead Ball Era as much as he stands in contrast to it. In that rough and tumble period of our national pastime, when the sport was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. His utter pitching supremacy is evident in his eye-popping record of 373-188--a nearly two-to-one ratio of success--and a career earned run average of just 2.13.

An essential component in five National League Championship seasons for the New York Giants, Matty is captured in the midst of that age of dominance upon this gorgeous hatchling from a pack of Piedmont cigarettes. He would lead the National League with the final sub-2.00 ERA of his career in 1911, narrowly (and controversially) losing out on the MVP to the Cubs' Frank Schulte.

The golden boy is framed by golden borders here, the delicate trait that supplies the T205 issue with its common nickname utterly free of the slightest defect. Surfaces are clean, registration sharp. We've certainly seen worse in a NM-MT 8 slab, and only one specimen has ever graded higher in the history of the PSA service. A stunning representation for the advanced collector.
