Description
1910 Philadelphia Athletics World Championship Award Pin Presented to Outfielder Bristol Lord. It all worked out for the mighty Mack Men, a fact that this auction lot substantiates, but the legendary owner/manager made one of the worst trades in Major League history to bring the owner of this important relic to Philly, swapping Lord for a young outfielder by the name of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson midway through the 1910 season. But if the transaction would prove to be lopsided over the course of the next decade, Lord was undeniably effective in his new role, driving in the first run (and scoring the second) in the top of eighth inning in the clinching Game Five to put the game out of reach for the Chicago Cubs, and to send Championship awards like this one into production. The pin is elegant in its simplicity, the design radiating outward from a central large and genuine diamond to a baseball diamond, then to raised text reading, "World's Champions 1910," and finally to a victory laurel wreath. Threaded post and nut verso is engraved "Briscoe (sic) Lord," and stamped "F.H. Co." Total weight is twelve grams (12 g.). Pristine condition.
The pin was original sold by the Lord family with a two-page handwritten letter on team letterhead from Connie Mack regarding contract negotiations for either the 1911 or 1912 season, included here. Original mailing folds but no other issues of note. Ink is 9/10. Letter of provenance from grandson of Bris Lord. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic.
