Description

1910 E90-2 American Caramel Pirates Honus Wagner PSA VG-EX 4. Those unfamiliar with this issue are to be excused, as today the entire PSA graded population of the eleven-card set stands just north of 250. Filed under the hobby nomenclature of "E90-2," this particular American Caramel release was inspired by the 1909 World Championship of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a Fall Classic best remembered as the sole battlefield engagement of early legends Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner.

We find the latter honored here, the Carl Horner portraiture it utilizes familiar to even the most casual hobbyist due to its contemporaneous use in the fabled T206 issue. Here the Old Dutchman is set against a field of royal blue, but otherwise the format is quite similar to that of the tobacco era's most famous entry. "Wagner, Pittsburg" text on obverse gives way to corporate advertising on verso, promoting a product just as addictive, but perhaps less sinister, than the one that purportedly prompted Wagner to deny his endorsement.

Color and registration are particularly fine here, supplying visual strength that easily surpasses the technical rating. Typical corner wear appears to be the primary factor in the official PSA assessment. Six representations have achieved this rating, with only eight superior.
