1909 E102 "Set of 25" Ty Cobb PSA EX-MT 6 - Pop Two, Highest PSA Grade! Ty Cobb once said "A ball bat is a wondrous weapon," and arguably none in the sport's history have been as proficient in its use. Though Pete Rose famously knocked the Peach from his perch in 1985, it's only fair to report that Charlie Hustle recorded 14,053 at bats compared to Cobb's 11,434. Had the Hall of Fame's first inductee kept his average pace through another 2,600 at bats to match Rose's chances, he'd be the sole member of the 5,000 Hit Club. Cobb remains the career leader with a .366 batting average, a record as safe as any in American sport. The great batsmen rests on his "wondrous weapon" with a sly gaze possibly toward a pitcher who may not know what is coming at him. Add in a glorious yellow/orange sky backdrop and one gets an iconic depiction of Cobb from the early candy/caramel card era.

The E102 series has always been a mystery for different reasons. The manufacturer of this scarce issue is unknown and the set is almost identical in design to E92, E101, E105, and E106 issues of the same era. Part of its immense appeal was the 1908 date in the ACC which meant this card was unquestionably his rookie card, with all due respect to post card collectors. All of the 25 players in the set are listed on the verso of each card. There are 4 secondary poses but those are so rare we fully understand why Burdick went with "Set of 25" for his mammoth work. Here we present the key card from the issue -Ty Cobb.

Graded PSA EX-MT 6. Eye appeal is well above the technical grade. You could not expect more pleasing colors. The classic image of Cobb, leaning on the lumber that made him a legend, rests slightly to the left. Some very slight and consistent corner wear complements the close to perfect centering and as we mentioned, colors are gorgeous and the registration is spot on. This is a fantastic card that any Cobb specialist will covet. Total population is just thirty-four. One of two in EX-MT with none graded higher.
