    Description

    Only two ever graded higher!

1909-1911 T206 Piedmont Ty Cobb (Red Portrait) PSA NM-MT 8. Soon after his Detroit Tigers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1909 World Series, the only meeting between these two Dead Ball era legends, Cobb lamented of Honus Wagner, "That god damned Dutchman is the only man in the game I can't scare." It was around that time that two of the most famous baseball cards in the collecting hobby were born, each a member of the fabled T206 set that has fascinated hobbyists for a full century. And one hundred years after Cobb and Wagner battled for supremacy in the sixth edition of the Fall Classic, their rivalry continues.

When factoring condition into the assessment, the listed beauty is even more scarce than the Wagner representation that has captured the imagination of the hobby for over a century. Only twenty-six other red-backed Cobbs share this specimen's lofty NM-MT 8 rating, a status surpassed only twice (both 8.5) in the history of PSA's service.

One suspects that an eastward shift of the image area is all that restricts entry to the penthouse of the grading structure, a shortcoming even easier to dismiss in cards issued during the Dead Ball Era when antiquated production methodology nearly assured imperfect centering. Color and registration are effectively flawless, and a stunning absence of wear leaves the corners as sharp as Cobb's famous spikes. A gorgeous representation for the uncompromising collector.
