Description
The single best example bearing one of the rarest advertising backs!
1909-11 T206 Polar Bear Ty Cobb (Red Portrait) PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop
One, None Higher for Brand! "In legend," Cobb wrote, shortly
before his passing in 1961, "I am a sadistic, slashing,
swashbuckling despot who waged war in the guise of sport." The
truth, of course, is somewhat more complex than that, but this
greatest figure of the Dead Ball Era was unquestionably the most
determined ballplayer of his time (and perhaps of all time). Every
great ballplayer's yin will have its yang--for Lou Gehrig, his
unwillingness to rest after concussions may have been his undoing.
Mickey Mantle lived every day like his last, making his last day
come too quickly. And Cobb brought the same gritted teeth fervor to
breaking every record in the books that he did to breaking the jaws
of those who disrespected him.The Georgia Peach is honored four times in the most famous trading card issue of the Dead Ball Era, and the presented variation is elevated above the vast majority of all examples by its ultra-rare "Polar Bear" back. This is the single finest example bearing that advertising on its backside, and only twice surpassed (by a pair of NM-MT+ 8.5's) when considering Cobb Red Backgrounds of all formats. In short, this is not only one of the finest Cobb trading cards that exists, but one of the most exceptional pre-war cards, period.
We're particularly struck by the perfect image quality, which hits the bullseye in registration. The borders are blazing white, well-balanced, and turn at razor sharp corners. And, of course, condition is an absolute miracle of preservation, worthy of the most discerning of high-end collectors.
