The highest confirmed Old Mill PSA & SGC graded example!

1909-11 T206 Old Mill Ty Cobb (Green Portrait) PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop Eight, None Higher. "In legend," Cobb wrote, shortly before his passing in 1961, "I am a sadistic, slashing, swashbuckling despot who waged war in the guise of sport." The truth, of course, is somewhat more complex than that, but this greatest figure of the Dead Ball Era was unquestionably the most determined ballplayer of his time (and perhaps of all time). Every great ballplayer's yin will have its yang--for Lou Gehrig, his unwillingness to rest after concussions may have been his undoing. Mickey Mantle lived every day like his last, making his last day come too quickly. And Cobb brought the same gritted teeth fervor to breaking every record in the books that he did to breaking the jaws of those who disrespected him.

The Georgia Peach is honored four times in the most famous trading card issue of the Dead Ball Era, and the presented variation is the rarest of them all. The population of red background portraits more than doubles this green format on the PSA population chart. In fact, in the entirety of the thousands of T206 Cobb variations currently residing within a PSA capsule, "Green Portrait" variants account for the smallest percentage. Accounting for all brands, the offered representation enjoys supremacy as one of just eight cards at the NM-MT 8 level with none higher. Narrow the population only to representations bearing an "Old Mill Cigarettes" reverse, and this is a "Pop One With None Higher" title-holder!

The spectacular condition of this card nearly earns the first Mint 9 rating in PSA history, but a minor westward shift blocks the designation. Otherwise, this gorgeous specimen provides no fodder for detractors, appearing in every regard as if it has just emerged from a Taft-era cigarette pack. It's a card every bit as pristine as the legendary "Black Swamp Find" which Heritage Auctions unearthed in 2012.
