    Description

1907 Seamless Steel Tubes Co. Ty Cobb SGC 20 Fair 1.5 - New to The Hobby! This is a recently discovered example and is new to the hobby! The young man named Cobb from Royston, GA was held in such esteem that even at the tender age of 21 he was already a subject for promotion and being dubbed "...the greatest ball player of the year in America." The 1907 Detroit Tigers were a powerhouse club generating a 92-58 W-L record and would take the American League pennant. For Cobb, it would be his first of many 200+ hit seasons and an eye popping .350 batting average. That success brought attention and opportunities. Today, none would claim these issues are readily available and this Detroit Seamless Steel Tubes Co. card is, after 110+ years, this is only the seventh confirmed copy we are aware of. Being based out of Detroit, one can only wonder if Seamless Steel included other stars like Sam Crawford or Hughie Jennings or was Cobb the lone star of this show.

Graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5. The card is free of any writing but does bear a typed address and postal cancellation date of October 7, 1907 (the day before game one of the '07 World Series. This is by far one of the rarest early Cobb collectibles. The full figure portrait of Cobb in his dirty uniform, bat and glove in hand, and that steely (no pun intended) glare of pure determination that would be his calling card for decades is unique to this piece.
