1902 Cy Young Original Cabinet Photograph by Carl Horner, PSA/DNA Type 1. As the era's most noteworthy and celebrated baseball photographer, Carl Horner bears the lion's share of responsibility for the manner in which we see the early game in our mind's eye. His simple yet expertly rendered studio portraits of the men populating the Dead Ball game served as the template for much of the tobacco and candy card issues of the day, most notably the image of Honus Wagner that appears upon the most coveted and valuable trading card in the collecting hobby.

Horner's trading card images are seated portrait shots so this example represents a thrilling and welcome deviation from standard practice. The somewhat awkward pose struck here by the winningest pitcher in Major League history harkens back to the Old Judge issues of the late 19th century when Young was young. The glorious single-year Boston Americans jersey style he is wearing here allows us to link the shot to a season that saw the inaugural class Hall of Famer lead the newly-minted Junior Circuit with thirty-two victories, forty-one complete games, and over 384 innings of work.

The 5.5x3.75" image is simply perfect, while the Horner-imprinted mount exhibits a couple corner chips at right, while a break at the top left corner is secured with tape on verso. A pencil notation along bottom border reading "Page 28" suggests the image was printed in a publication of some sort, presumably "Baseball Magazine," whose stamping appears on verso. Dimensions of mount are 7x5". LOA from PSA/DNA, Type 1.

Just wanted to let you know how pleased I am regarding the sale of my hockey jersey. You were great to work with, you answered all my phone calls and e-mails in a prompt manner, and you did a great job marketing the jersey.
