Quite possibly the earliest signed baseball card!

1902-11 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet Signed by Cy Young, SGC 40 VG 3. Few matters in sports are as certain as the immortality of Cy Young's career victories record, but the status of this W600 cabinet as the only example on Earth signed by the Win King should qualify. The thought that another might exist challenges every law of probability--any card collector worth his salt will tell you that unsigned examples of W600 cabinets are so rare that even the exact count of original entries within the issue remains a mystery. That intense scarcity is easily explained--the cabinets were only available through a mail-in redemption process that severely limited initial distribution. The wide array of dangers awaiting an oversized (5x7.5") paper product over the course of a passing century did the rest. The known surviving population of unsigned Young representations hovers around one dozen.

But the signature applied to this particular specimen makes the piece as unlikely as a lightning strike on a lottery winner, arguably the most improbable lot in a Platinum Night auction packed to the gills with intensely scarce relics. Even at the time of Young's 1955 passing, the practice of presenting trading cards to athletes for signing was in its infancy. This playing-days application, in the absurdly rare "D.T. Young" style, may well establish this as the earliest autograph on any trading card in the hobby.

The black fountain pen ink survives at an impressive 8/10 level, with the card itself, featuring the photographic portraiture of esteemed early baseball photographer Carl Horner, rated at a VG level by the experts at SGC. Scattered foxing accounts for the bulk of the points lost, as the card otherwise exhibits only moderate corner wear to suggest its advanced age. By any standard of measure, this is a truly thrilling hobby rarity that will take the owner's collection to a place where nobody else could follow. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
