1889 Excelsior "Stockton "1889 Champions" Cabinet Card SGC VG/EX 4 - Possibly Unique. Very few baseball fans will be familiar with baseball & Stockton, CA even though they share a history that goes back to the 1860's. Just two years after the California League was founded, the city of Stockton sponsored what turned out to be a very talented club who won the CA League pennant in 1888. They placed poorly in 1889 and that would be the last of the Stockton club. Remarkably they inspired Ernest Lawrence Thayer to write his classic poem, "Casey at the Bat." The area where Banner Island Park was had a second name - Mudville. Offered is a beautifully produced cabinet card with 13 members of the 1888 squad in the shape of a lucky horseshoe. Players are identified next to each portrait. The back shows a credit for the Excelsior Art Gallery which "Monaco" studios was a part of. The possibly unique cabinet presents wonderfully, both card mount and the all-important central print. Gold gilt decoration along the outer perimeter has not seemed to have worn away much is not at all over the last 130 years. Graded SGC VG-EX 4. This is an extremely rare piece featuring a very short-lived West Coast team that appears to not have had an official name and just went by the "Stockton" name.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
