1888 N162 Goodwin "Champions" Cap Anson PSA EX 5. The first great star of our National Pastime, Anson debuted at age nineteen with the 1871 Rockford Forest City squad of the National Association, laboring twenty-seven years in a Major League uniform prior to his 1897 retirement. He is not just any member of the 3,000 Hits Club, he was the founding member of the selective fraternity that set the standard for future excellence. His handlebar mustache and steely look of determination help captivate the viewer as one gazes upon this quintessential Victorian era issue. The 50-card "Champions" edition is certainly one of the best tobacco card productions of the 19th Century with a sports theme. Featuring an array of athletes from various sporting endeavors, none are more sought after than the eight baseball players and the undisputed key subject is Chicago 1st Baseman Adrian "Cap" Anson. Anson was a prominent member of the 19th Century baseball community and the N162 which bears his portrait is one of his best cardboard keepsakes.

Graded PSA EX 5. The offered example is bright and clean with minimal condition issues (wear) affecting the corners and edges. The front frame is slightly off white, but centered fantastically. A supremely important relic, this card is certain to reign as the crown jewel of even the finest early baseball card collections and a fantastic addition to a 19th Century or Anson specialty collection.
