1888-89 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Ed Delahanty (#123-3) SGC 30 Good 2. "Big Ed" Delahanty was one of the most feared sluggers of the turn-of-the-century game. Three times Delahanty finished the season north of the fabled .400 mark, and his .346 career average places him fifth on the all-time leaderboard. He remains the only man in history to hit four inside-the-park home runs in a single contest. But despite the remarkable talent that earned him a 1945 posthumous induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Ed Delahanty's legacy remains the shocking manner of his sudden passing. Ejected from a railroad train just north of the Canada/US border on July 2, 1903 for drunk and disorderly conduct, Delahanty attempted to cross a railroad bridge over the Niagara River on foot only to fall to his death, swept over the famous Falls.

He is honored with seven different N172 Old Judge cards but currently not all seven have been seen as an N173 cabinet and this is to the best our research the first time this batting pose has been offered at auction. This is his "Bat at ready nearly horizontal" pose, #'d 123-2 in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890).

Graded SGC 30 Good 2. The PSA census shows just one "fielding" entry. This is one of three N173s noted on the SGC census and we believe is the only one of this image. Running horizontally between the photo and the "Old Judge Cigarettes" advertising there is surface disruption where either pencil has been removed or soiling was cleaned? This accounts for the SGC rating as the piece otherwise is a wonderfully well preserved excellent-mint jewel. Delahanty is among the most important and coveted Baseball HoFers that appear in the Old Judge promotions.
