1888-89 N173 Old Judge Cabinet Dan Brouthers SGC 84 NM 7 - One of The Finest N173's On The Planet! The visual combination of the deep and rich photo, the clean and glowing mount surface and the SGC insert is almost beyond compare. Collectors of the N173 Old Judge issues during its two years of production didn't just pull the latest offering from a pack of cigarettes. Larger and considerably more expensive to produce compared to their N172 counterparts, the N173 Cabinets were available only by redeeming a coupon through the mail, an obstacle that discouraged all but the most fervent collectors and greatly limiting the population relative to other contemporary issues.

Offered is an N173 Old Judge cabinet card featuring Dan Brouthers. Dan Brouthers was one of the greatest stars of 19th century baseball. His career spanned from 1879 to 1896 and two games in 1904 for no less than ten different teams in the National League, American Association and Players League. He excelled regardless of the team his jersey read. "Big Dan" was a consistent batter who batted between .307 and .374 for 15 years winning five batting titles. Other years when batting honors did not come his way he batted .327 (1884), .359 (1885), .370 (1886), .338 (1887), .337 (1893) and .347 (1894). He was a one man batting crew in the 1880's where he averaged a robust .347 on almost 1,500 hits over the ten-year period.

Graded SGC 84 NM 7. This is the highest graded example of Brouthers and almost for the entire N173 set. The reverse of the 6-3/8" x 4-1/4" mount shows a very small surface imperfection. The image quality is nothing short of remarkable. The surface is 100% free of scratching, marring, scuffs, etc. The image has total range of values and fine detail. "Boston" has been written in hand to reflect his trade from Detroit after the 1888 season. What a truly wonderful and visually commanding collectible of one of the greatest stars of 19th century baseball.
