Description
1887 N693 Kalamazoo Bats Team - Philadelphia Athletics SGC 40 VG 3. Well over a century ago, the Charles Gross & Co. based in Philadelphia made their name for selling tobacco and cigars. They existed at a time when there was no shortage of tobacco products and it also happened to be the dawn of the era of the insert trading card. What they certainly didn't plan on was giving the hobby some of the most coveted examples of 19th Century baseball cards ever produced. Taking a step up from the standard dimensions on the era, Charles Gross & Co. offerings under their "Kalamazoo Bats " brand cigars were a premium sized card promoting "The Best Cigar In the World For The Money." They are also among the rarest 19th Century cards and serve as nothing short of a deep source of pride of everyone fortunate enough to have one in their collection. Higher up on the Kalamazoo bats rarity scale from the baseball player cards are the six known team cards designated "N693" in the American Card Catalog. Our offered card features the Philadelphia Athletics. The lineup includes such talents as HoFer Wilbert Robinson, Harry Stovey, Denny Lyons (He batted .367) and Tom Poorman who was hit by ten pitches - a team high. The 64-69 squad finished fifth in the AA and it seems they lived or died that season on the arms of two 20-year old rookies - Ed Seward (25-25) and Gus Weyhing (26-28). Over the next two years the hurlers would win 114 games, each with a 30-win season.
Graded SGC 40 VG 3 One of only six examples graded by SGC. Three have graded VG which share title of "Highest Graded Example!" The card shows some corner wear. There reverse has a stain barely the size of a 10-cent piece and that is all that seems to account for the grade. The central image is glossy with a surface free of any dirt and scratches. Photo quality is very-good but with a full range of tones. We see no creases or wrinkles. A fine example from a series few hobbyists can say they have in their collection.
