1887 N175-2 Gypsy Queen Roger Connor (Large Size) SGC 60 EX 5 - Only Two Graded Examples! Here is the only, none higher, 1887 Gypsy Queen Cigarettes N175 Roger Connor Large Size ever graded by SGC. For 23 years before Babe Ruth broke it, Connor held the all-time MLB record for career home runs with 138. Henry Aaron, who broke Ruth's record of 714 in 1974, was usually listed as 6'0" and 180/185, but most observers feel the 6-foot listing was generous, and when he entered the National League weighing only 165 pounds, the Milwaukee Braves had trouble finding a uniform for his athletic, but very thin, frame. Not so for Connor and Ruth. The 6'2" Ruth was well-built and athletic early in his career and very heavy later on. Connor, at 6'3", 220 lbs., was a real giant in his time and this card shows his size well. Connor, best known as a New York Giant, was in the top ten in National League home run leaders for 12 years, yet amazingly he never led the league in a single year, although he finished second four times. Connor, as were most power hitters of the time, was also known for triples, since the ballparks were large and the ball was dead. Despite his size, he could run reasonably well, and he collected 233 three-base hits lifetime. The Aaron/Ruth publicity brought Connor back into the public light and led to his Hall of Fame enshrinement in 1976.Most of this 114-card set consists of smaller sepia tinged photos measuring 1-1/2" by 2-1/2", but the large size sepia tinged photos, such as this one, measures, 2" by 3-1/2", and were most likely used as premiums. Graded SGC 60 EX 5. This is the finest example of only two graded by SGC!
