    Description

1887 Four Base Hits Frank Hankinson SGC VG 3 - The Only SGC & PSA Graded Example! Frank Hankinson played for the New York Mets in 1885-87 - the first New York Metropolitans, who played in the American Association, a major league at the time. Hankinson was primarily a third baseman, but also pitched. He started his big-league career in 1878 with the Chicago White Stockings, a National League team that was the forerunner of the Chicago Cubs. He started 25 games as a pitcher for the White Stockings the next season and went 15-10. Hankinson also played for three other National League teams: The Cleveland Blues in 1880, the Troy Trojans in 1881, and the New York Gothams, forerunner of the New York Giants, in 1885-7. He finished his career with the American Association Kansas City Cowboys in 1888. He hit only .228 lifetime, so he earned his salary with top defense at the hot corner. He led the American Association in fielding percentage for third basemen in 1885, and in 3B range factor per game in 1885-6. He also led in 3B double plays in the NL in 1878 and 1881, and then again in the AA in 1886.

Among the rarest and most visually commanding 19th Century tobacco cards, the Four Base Hits set is so obscure that Jefferson Burdick did not even include it in his famed American Card Catalog. The thin cards measure 2-1/4" by 3-7/8" and are nothing short of a treasured acquisition. This 1887 Four Base Hits card of Frank Hankinson has something in common with all but one other player on the SGC census - it is the only card graded by SGC!
